First Aid for the Obstetrics & Gynecology Boards (FIRST AID Specialty Boards) Review

Don't be fooled !
Although the title of this book is "OBGYN for the boards", I'd rather rename it "OBGYN for 1st year med students". The information is very insufficient for a 4th (USA) or 5th year (Canada) resident preparing for the boards.
Don't waste your money....keep it for your vacations !

Medical Care of the Pregnant Patient, Second Edition Review

Medical Care of the Pregnant Patient, Second Edition

This book is well written and concise, straight to the point. I read the chapters of the specialty area that concerns me. Everything is there, but it is a bit too concise. Though enough that one would know what to do in each situation. I guess it depends on what one is looking for.

This compact resource offers ready access to information on exam preparation, equipment selection, clinical history, lab findings, etiology, and sonographic appearance for a wide variety of disorders. Based on the presenting symptoms, the reader is guided to the proper sections of the pocket guide to find information on disorders likely to cause the symptom. Each disorder section covers the most common causes of the disorder, related abnormal lab values, and sonographic appearance. Following these instructions, the sonographer can provide the physician with everything needed to make an accurate diagnosis, so the patient does not have to be called back for additional scanning.Convenient pocket-size format is easy to carry in lab coat pocket and organized with tabs to facilitate finding information quickly.Carefully chosen information provides just what the sonographer needs to scan competently - allowing the sonographer to gather all information the physician needs to make a diagnosis.
All routine exams are presented for ob/gyn, abdominal, and superficial structures, plus some of the less commonly performed exams for which even experienced sonographers may need help.Leads the sonographer from the patient's symptoms to the appropriate scanning protocol, rather than assuming a given diagnosis and providing a scanning protocol to confirm the diagnosis. The Next Step provides more detailed scanning information, alerting the sonographer to other scanning that should be done based on the initial findings.Line drawings show relevant ultrasound images, providing example of anatomy that should be visualized on the scan.

The Official Pocket Guide to Diabetic Exchanges Review

The Official Pocket Guide to Diabetic Exchanges
Average Reviews:

This is exactly what my dietician wrote up for me to follow yet in a condensed, easy to follow, easy to tote reference. It outlines a basic plan for eating. For me, knowing the amount of calories per serving for each of the food groups really helped.
By following these healthful habits, I was able to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight (lost over 30 pounds in 8 weeks) while eating 1500 to 1800 calories without feeling hungry or deprived. Working out 6 weeks prior to following this plan (and prior to meeting with a dietician) without changing my diet brought no weight loss even though my fitness level increased.
This pocket guide isn't just for diabetics.

Neonatology : Management, Procedures, On-Call Problems, Diseases, Drugs (LANGE Clinical Science) Review

Neonatology : Management, Procedures, On-Call Problems, Diseases, Drugs (LANGE Clinical Science)
Average Reviews:

This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.
This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.
This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!
