Dr. Hobbins has put a lot of heart and soul and practical application into this book, "Obstetric Ultrasound: Artistry in Practice." The book is laid out in a very logical sequence and should become part of every OB resident's library. The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat & Carb Counter Review

The Doctor's Pocket Calorie, Fat and Carb Counter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Last year I was diagnosed as a diabetic. While not an extreme case I still needed to start watching my carbs and weight. The problem is while watching your carbs and fat is easy at home, it's extremely difficult to do so while traveling. My wife and I went on a long trip last summer driving across a good chunk of the US. We were afraid my new diatary needs might spoil the trip a bit. I mean who wants to spend the whole time on vacation worrying about what you're going to eat all the time? This book allowed me to be able to stay within my carb and fat limits even when eating at places like McDonalds, Burger King or your average roadside diner.
The book has a ton of practical applications for someone trying to watch their calories, fat or carbs.
One last thing. Do not let the word "pocket" make you shy away from this book. Yeah, it can fit in your pocket but I looked through a number of full sized nutritional guides before finding this one and none of the $30 books has as much information and especially practical information as this book.
By the way. I lost 30 pounds and I'm in the best shape of my life!

As physical activity becomes increasingly popular, the diversity of active participants is greater than ever. Professionals working with active clients have an appreciation for the fact that many of their clients face unique dietary challenges. Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs is the first book to deliver state-of-the-art nutrition information pertaining to a variety of these special populations with distinctive dietary needs.

This easy-to-use reference provides scientifically based nutrition guidelines for a wide range of physically active clients—including vegetarians, pregnant and menopausal women, children and adolescents, older adults, people with diabetes, and participants in weight-restricted sports. Written in a straightforward manner, Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs is ideal for athletic trainers and personal trainers. It allows them to guide clients in proper eating for optimal exercise performance, and it recognizes when a client needs to be referred to a registered dietitian. The text may also be used as a quick reference for nutritionists and dietitians and as a valuable resource for those who exercise competitively, for health and fitness, or just for fun.

The following are some of the text's useful features:

-50 figures, tables, and special elements that you can photocopy and give to patients or clients to ensure they follow your suggestions—including examples of poor versus better carbohydrate choices, the Motherwell Pregnancy Food Pyramid, and the healthy effects of certain fats

-12 real-life case studies from guest dietitians to illustrate how the material can be applied in a variety of settings

-Sample meal plans and an appendix of alternative food choices that you can photocopy so you can design individualized plans for patients or clients and teach them how to adapt the plans to accommodate personal tastes and needs

-Exercise guidelines for specific populations to assist you in prescribing appropriate exercise for each person's condition and stage of lifeIn addition, the reference is valuable to coaches and sports medicine physicians in their efforts to provide sound dietary advice to both noncompetitive exercisers who want to stay fit and competitive athletes who want to achieve optimal performance. The text contains practical guidelines for addressing the needs of children who exercise and play sports as well as the needs of overweight athletes and exercisers in weight-dependent sports—an area often overlooked in sport nutrition books.

Physical therapists who work with the geriatric population will also find the resource useful because it will bring them up to date on meeting the nutrition and exercise needs of older adults as they progress through the physiological changes that come with aging. Psychiatrists will use the practical information to ensure proper counseling, healthy nutrition, and appropriate exercises for patients with eating disorders and disordered eating.

There is no better resource for anyone who needs to understand scientifically based nutrition guidelines for a wide range of physically active people. Fitness Nutrition for Special Dietary Needs explains nutrition guidelines for unique populations and also helps you prescribe a healthy diet appropriate to each client's condition and stage of life to ensure they achieve optimal performance and stay fit.

Clinical Protocols in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Third Edition Review

Clinical Protocols in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Third Edition

Hi. i first heard about Protocols from a posting on Medscape and bit the bullet in buying it to see if would be helpful in my review for my boards in November. though written in 2003 (new edition coming out 2/2008), i did find it helpful to augment study with Up To Date, Compendium (this book utilized the ACOG Practice Bulletins, etc), etc. it is alphabatized by topics and provides salient (in a nut-shell) info one should know, though these topics are not sectioned by GYN, OB, REI, ONC, etc and no pics are present, unfortunately. some very good tables and algorithms, particularly cardiac disease in pregnancy, breast disorders, etc. it also has a section on Boards in the back --these topics apparently are historically popular, but i wasn't asked much from there. i think the book would be helpful for boards study as an additional, but not sole, resource. i also think it would come in handy in day to day practice. the author has an interest (or has in the past) in working with ob/gyns trying to get boarded.

The Pregnancy Bed Rest Book: A Survival Guide for Expectant Mothers and Their Families
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read every bed rest book I could find. This is not the best. The author has attempted to write a comprehensive book, and does a good job, just not great. There are better. It's very short, and after reading it, which took a couple of hours at most, I felt like I didn't have enough information. I wish the author would have had more experience with extended hospital bed rest. That would have been beneficial.

If you'd like to know what can go wrong, this is the book for you. It even ends by assuming your children will be very premature. And the 'good, the bad, and the snuggly' sections provide snippets from parents who've had everything from anemia, to conjoined twins, and the double threat of a vaginal delivery for one baby and an emergency ultrasound for the other. Where is the joy? Not in this book.
