The varied style- some case info, some reading, some questions- for each vignette helped to maintain focus, and for me provided a much better prep than just the short questions found in many other books.

Many of us in the field chose neonatology because of the potential for complex, medically and ethically challenging scenarios to arise anytime we are called to the delivery room and the opportunity to care for critically ill newborns while working under intense time pressure in the neonatal intensive care unit. Neonatal Emergencies, edited by Georg Hansmann, MD, PhD, is a welcome addition to our field of medicine. One of the most unique and valuable aspects of this text is its focus on emergency and critical care of the newborn. Unlike other textbooks of neonatology that attempt to cover all aspects of neonatal care and because of this tend to become too unwieldy to serve as a source of rapidly accessible information, Neonatal Emergencies presents pertinent information in a concise, easy-to-read manner. Figures, tables and algorithms convey information clearly and succinctly. There are many examples of practical advice for the healthcare professional at the bedside including topics such as what questions to ask when on the phone with a colleague who wishes to refer a patient to you for transport and lists of appropriate procedures to perform, equipment to use and medications to deliver when caring for a sick neonate. Key points are emphasized by positioning in a box where the text is either preceded by an exclamation point or is shaded. Pertinent questions are also included so that the reader may perform a self-assessment after reviewing the material in a particular section or chapter.
The practical nature of the content of this text is also plainly evident in its emphasis on physical examination skills and what can be learned about the neonatal patient using one's eyes, ears and hands. Other important topics covered in the following pages but rarely found in other references include decision-making, training issues, and the importance of effective communication with fellow healthcare professionals (between and among the obstetric and neonatology team members) and with parents. Although not a comprehensive resource on the ethical challenges inherent in neonatal care this text does touch upon them in a sensitive and compassionate manner.
Simulation-based training is finding its way into the formal preparation and assessment of multidisciplinary teams of healthcare professionals charged with caring for newborns. Indeed the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) of the American Academy of Pediatrics will be evolving into a career-long learning program with simulation-based training at its core. In a way Neonatal Emergencies serves as a primer for those looking to develop realistic immersive scenarios for their training programs; thus its publication is timely, indeed.
Neonatal Emergencies presents an evidence-based approach to care of the critically ill newborn with contributions from an international panel of experts and supported by multiple contemporary references. It will serve as a readily accessible resource to a broad group of users including established pediatric/neonatal and obstetric physicians, anesthesiologists, nurses, nurse practitioners, midwives and transport specialists as well as trainees in these domains. It's like a Qbook, but small enough that you can take with you on travels (like when doing rotations or if ur trying to do Step 2 while interviewing) to give you practice with questions when you don't have access to an online Qbank. Has imaging questions too!

(More customer reviews)This book, particularly the new 5th edition (released in August, 2003) is a must-have for on-call nights in the NICU. Although not as complete in terms of information as a full textbook, this book contains a blurb on nearly every topic one might encounter in the NICU. It is also surprisingly up to date for a textbook, containing the latest standards of care on controversial topics such as PPHN, use of ECMO and BPD, plus lots of other conditions.
This is no longer a spiral-bound book, which has positives and negatives. On the positive side, it's probably more durable long-term - no more ripping of pages and holes out of the spiral. On the negative side, it's harder to keep your page open without bending the spine out of shape.
This is by far the best on-call reference manual for neonatology. It's highly recommended by everyone I speak with, from staff to fellows to residents. I would recommend it as well!

NMS Pediatrics (National Medical Series for Independent Study) Review

(More customer reviews)This book is more in depth than blueprints pediatrics. A lot more pages to go through so you have to be disciplined. The best part is they start from step one and explain concepts. Versus blueprints which seems to assume you already know the concepts and they point out the more important details to know for Step 2. The neonatology and cardiology sections were great, so I read them instead of the corresponding sections in blueprints. I think there are a lot of wonderful sections to read to get a good foundation on pathophysiology. Some NMS books (like NMS Medicine) have come out with the 5th edition 2004 - which has a nicer layout, larger book size, easier on the eyes, and some nice algorithms & tables. You might want to wait for the 5th edition of Pediatrics.

Swanson's Family Medicine Review: Expert Consult - Online and Print Review

(More customer reviews)I am currently studying for my certification in Family Medicine. I started off with the Swanson 5th Edition while waiting for the 6th Edition to be released. This 6th Ed. blows the 5th Edition out of the water! There are so many great things to say about this edition that I IMMEDIATELY stopped reading the 5th Ed. Some things about the 6th Ed:
*Pertinent clinical cases, relevant EVIDENCE BASED material, current and reliable sources, easy to read format and explanations:
The cases have sources from 2001 to 2006, most of them around 2003-2004. The information is so new that I am able to read from my collection of AAFP articles (2004-2008) when I need more information, and they are cited in the Suggested Reading sections. USPSTF guidelines are current, as well as current CDC guidelines. Other sources cited are mostly from Harrison, Nelson, USPSTF, New England Journal, Lancet, and other well cited authorities.
*Sections that focus on Palliative Care, Addiction Medicine, Geriatrics, Urgent Care, and the random things you get tested on but can't find anywhere to study them from.
*I am studying by using the ITE 2006-2008 and the topics are all there. Very little waste in this Edition.
*Errors: I have gone through and cross referenced other sources, and the errors of the 5th Edition are not in this edition. The only thing you will find is that the answers to the letter options (in less than 10 of the 2200 questions) would be a typo. So if you answered B, the answer would say that D is the option, but the prose would explain why B is correct. Easy to figure out even if you don't know what the right answer is since it will explain the right answer anyway.
Overall I HIGHLY recommend this book for the ITE and the Certification exam! It's a great source for review, and the suggested readings at the end of every chapter will give you more than you need to know about the topic.
