Dr. Guttmacher's Pregnancy, Birth & Family Planning (Complet ely Revised: (Completely Revised and Updated) Review

This book is an excellent, easy to read reference, that informs women by giving accurate, up to date information regarding pregnancy, birth and family planning. Ronnie Lichtman,CNM has introduced a fresh format in which midwifery care is introduced and midwives are included throughout this comprehensive guide as primary healthcare providers for women. This book gives different alternatives regarding providers, birth settings such as hospitals, free standing birthing centers, hospital birth centers, and home births and different types of collaborative practices available.
Pregnancy is acknowledged as a healthy state, not a medical event and that our bodies are designed to bring life into the world, they are "biologically competent". Complications are discussed, but women should walk away with the knowledge that childbearing is safe and that they have many birth options available to them.
I applaud Lynn Simpson, MD and Allan Rosenfield, MD for continuing to believe as did Dr.Guttmacher, of each woman's right to have information about her body and of her ability to enter into a partnership with her physician or midwife and make informed choices.
As one her former students, I would like to thank Ronnie for expanding women's options for midwifery care through the sharing of her knowledge and experience, and for working so hard to provide her colleagues and midwifery students an open path in which to practice.
I highly recommend this book.

YOU: Having a Baby: The Owner's Manual to a Happy and Healthy Pregnancy Review

YOU: Having a Baby: The Owner's Manual to a Happy and Healthy Pregnancy

I purchased this book based on a recommendation in a magazine. The excerpt provided there talked about epigenetics. I was very intrigued and expected there to be a wealth of information on this topic -- there was just a very short section :( The rest of the information is quite good, and I picked up several valuable pointers (despite the fact that I've read about a gazillion books on pregnancy before). However, I agree with reviewers that said this book is not essential if you have others laying around the house already. The epigenetics section certainly isn't enough to set it apart like I hoped it would.
I also found the book to be very disorganized (jumping from what to eat while you're pregnant, to what to buy for your newborn, to how to choose an OB, to what to do if you are having trouble getting pregnant, and back to what to do while you're pregnant, and so on). I found myself wondering who in the world organized the content for the book, because it didn't make sense to me!
All in all, I was very disappointed by this title, which I have for the Kindle. As a note, the Kindle version's formatting is VERY off and many sentences are completely missing and certain tables completely unreadable.

DIY Baby Do It Yourself Baby: Your Essential Pregnancy Handbook Review

DIY Baby Do It Yourself Baby: Your Essential Pregnancy Handbook
Average Reviews:

PROS: Dr Shelley Binkley is an obstetrician who provides a great deal of very helpful information on pregnancy and the process of birth, sometimes utilizing really good photos... I found her approach to dicussing the information refreshingly easy to read and informative. She includes a large variety of pertinent information about different aspects of pregnancy and birth with a good inclusion of options. I recommend this book for pregnant moms wanting to learn more about whats going on with their body and the birth process. It is well laid out/ a quick easy reference.
CONS: She mixes in her own experiences occasionally which is sometimes good but as a health care professional.... not always a good thing. I feel options should be presented factually without opinion. Some of the good photos are too small to see detail. :( She discusses homebirth ... good :)...but clearly steers the reader away from that option. It just isn't my style of teaching. Let the reader decide with good information and education.
As a lactation professional, I do not recommend this book for breastfeeding information. All breastfeeding books can get outdated quickly. It is the interjection of personal opinion of breastfeeding management, sometimes not entirely correct that concerns me the most.

This book was recommended by my ob gyn and can I just say - thank goodness it was! I really take issue with the doula's review below, and feel that she skimmed the book instead of taking the time to read it.
For example, he doesn't say that you should not increase your water consumption, but rather dispells the myth that you have to drink 8.5 glasses a day. He also goes into detail why things like changing the cat litter, eating sushi, and drinking coffee and occasional alcohol are actually not the horrid things that we've been told, and more importantly ( I thought), he told you what the actual studies were that gave people the info in the first place. In one example, he cited a study which followed 100,000 women who drank less than 2 units of alcohol a day. Not one of the babies born to these women showed any ill effects whatsoever.
But he also stresses that smoking is incredibly harmful and should be eliminated completely.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is pregnant or wants to become pregnant. A stressed out mother can be more harmful to the unborn child than one who is happy and confident in her choices.
