This book offers an interesting and completely comprehensible overview of diabetes. It is not a "how-to" book, nor does it pretend to be. Rather, it gives you the background information you need to better understand your care plan that your physician, dietician, and whomever else prepares with you. While there are many other volumes on the subject, I recommend this one as an essential resource for any living with diabetes or a diabetic.

Managing Diabetes Your Way Workbook: Living with Type 2 Diabetes Review

Managing Diabetes Your Way Workbook: Living with Type 2 Diabetes

I'm Beth Roybal, the author. I'd like to provide a little more info about this book. MDYWWB is not just another "program." Instead, I focus on trying to help you identify the areas in your life that are most likely to make controlling type 2 diabetes difficult--and then I review strategies that you can pick and choose from to tailor your own approach. I have a vested interest in this book, as my mom has diabetes and I'm considered at risk ("prediabetes"). I've been writing on various health topics for years, and my approach is to be friendly, casual, and sometimes even funny. The goal is to help you help yourself in living with this disease. Take a look inside the book--I think you'll like it, and I hope you find it useful!

This book provides a structured, at-home program to monitor, track, and gain control of the disease. The key to this workbook's unique program is its personalization. Since each person's body chemistry is different, the first step is determining how different foods, types of exercise, and levels of stress affect individual blood sugar fluctuations. Managing Diabetes Your Way Workbook helps untangle the often-confusing combination of factors.

The Born-Again Diabetic: The handbook to help you get your diabetes in control (again) Review

The Born-Again Diabetic: The handbook to help you get your diabetes in control (again)

I'm a Type 1 diabetic. "The Born-Again Diabetic" *IS* the best book on diabetes I've ever read, and I've purchased several copies (directly from the publisher) to hand out to diabetic friends and family. I will warn the faint-hearted: the author takes great license in his choice of profanity. The first 135 pages are sprinkled liberally with d**n, sh**, and h*ll. I personally have no problem with that. But then, on page 136, he trots out the mother of all four-letter words, f***. While he uses it only a handful of times, it did prevent me from purchasing this book for my mother and my doctor. Shame, because for the sake of four four-letter words, the author has -in my opinion- greatly narrowed the scope of readers. I'd prefer to see an updated version -sans the f*** word- and get this into the hands of EVERY diabetic I know!

Much has been written about the explosion of diabetes on the world stage the 4,000 new cases a day we all know about, the millions of people unaware they have diabetes. But another epidemic is lurking. A silent shadow epidemic of diabetic patients who are identified and being treated, but for a variety of reasons have lost control and are slowly getting sicker and sicker with each passing day. You know who you are. This book is written for you: the previously diagnosed diabetic who has lost the edge, fallen off the wagon, or has lost hope and given up altogether. This book will give you control over your diabetes again. Its charter is to remind you of the things you forgot, update you on the things that have changed, and teach you the things you never learned. It s jam-packed with information, but it s written in an easy-to-read, conversational style laced with humor. We ll deal with the nuts and bolts of diabetes, the complications, the medications. We ll help you navigate the minefield of family, society, and economy. We ll give you, the out-of-control diabetic, the tools of knowledge and insight you need not just to survive, but to thrive. So now you understand our title. To be a born-again diabetic is not a religious experience. Rather, it is simply accepting what is and taking control again. Of diabetes. Of health. Of life.

Diabetes Management in Primary Care Review

Diabetes Management in Primary Care

Amazingly comprehensive review of all aspects of diabetes. This book is up to date, evidence-based, case based and most importantly, written from the heart. Rarely do medical text books read like novels. This is the exception. Check out the chapter on managing mental illness in patients with diabetes. The complications chapter is the most comprehensive and current review I have encountered.

The New Glucose Revolution for Diabetes: The Definitive Guide to Managing Diabetes and Prediabetes Using the Glycemic Index (Marlowe Diabetes Library) Review

The New Glucose Revolution for Diabetes: The Definitive Guide to Managing Diabetes and Prediabetes Using the Glycemic Index (Marlowe Diabetes Library)
Average Reviews:

The book deals with dieting viewed from the "Glycemic Index" point of view which in my opinion is a long overdue consideration in the management of diabetes. The book has sections for Type I Diabetics, Type II Diabetics, "Understanding Diabetes", "Managing Diabetes", "Managing Prediabetes", "Pregnancey, Birth, Breast Feeding and Diabetes", and Dietary Tables.
An example of the change of view, is the allowability of fructose in the diabetic diet. In my 1910 Encyclopedia Brittanica the article on diabetes says that fructose is a preferable sweetener to glucose or sucrose. For the last 50 years, the dietetic attitude has been to minimize any sugar in the diet, including fructose. "The New Glucose Revolution" on the other hand says, "It (fructose) stands out from the crowd (of sweeteners), being sweeter than sugar providing the same number of calories, but having only one third the GI(Glycemic Index). So you can use less fructose to achieve the same level of sweetness, and as a result, consume fewer calories and experience a much smaller rise in your blood glucose levels." This quotation demonstrates the viewpoint of this book in its balanced discussions of glycemic index, and the reduction in calories for weight control. Oddly, it vindicates some of the medicine of our Victorian ancestors as well.
