(More customer reviews)This book is great to look at. The pictures are sharp, and there are more pictures than I've seen in a textbook since I was in middle school. In some cases the pictures helped me to understand the concepts discussed, but more often than not, I found myself wondering why I paid for such a large book that is half pictures.
As a science major taking a nutrition class, I did notice that there are many semi-truths in the book. In class and in reading the book, many things are stated that aren't completely right. The two I had the most trouble with were the improper labeling of a "developing embryo" rather than calling it a "blastocyst", and in talking about food-borne illnesses dividing causes into either "bacteria" or "parasites" (bacteria which cause food-borne illness are, by definition, parasites).
All in all, I felt that the book presents a very simple view of biological processes, and focuses on covering quite a bit of nutrition. I would have preferred having a comprehensive and useful biological understanding of nutrition which may not have covered as much.
