Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility: Handbook for Clinicians; Pocket Edition Review

Obstetrics, Gynecology and Infertility: Handbook for Clinicians; Pocket Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this book as a 3rd and 4th-year medical student and am soon to begin my OB/Gyn residency.
Pros:
-Primary care section covers the big topics you might see in a typical primary care setting.
-Outline format helps pack in information
-Helpful diagrams, such as those for pre-eclampsia and abnormal uterine bleeding
-ACLS section (includes neonatal resuscitation algorithm)
-Concise medical spanish section
-Some high-yield anatomical drawings
-The new REI section is quite extensive (also a "con")
-The operative reports section is great. For residents, this may be one of the best aspects of the book.Cons:
-Excessively thick. This edition gained a lot of weight/pages because Dr. Lebovic's REI handbook was basically added on to the previous edition. The length and width pretty stayed the same, so the book just got thicker. The book is too thick to carry on you if you're just wearing scrubs, but can be fit in your white coat. Even so, it just feels annoyingly bulky and heavy.
-Not well-indexed. The index could be more extensive and intuitive. I have only used this book as a third- and fourth-year med student, but I can tell you that there were many times when I tried to look something up in the index, only to get frustrated and wish that I had just searched for it via UpToDate.
-The binding needs to be stronger, given the physical characteristics of the book. My book is split in half, only held together by the cover.
-The length of the REI section. It's roughly as long as the OB section. Given the scope of what OB/Gyn med students and residents experience, that much REI is too extensive for this type of book.
-Even though this book is jam-packed with info, there are many pages that have a lot of unused space. Which makes the thickness of the book even more annoying.
Should you buy it? If you're an OB/Gyn resident or a medical student with an interest in the field, yes. This is the gold-standard clinical handbook for OB/Gyn. If you're a third-year med student who probably isn't going into OB/Gyn, only get it if you think you'd really benefit from carrying a handbook that has a lot of information that you probably wouldn't need/use.
I hope that the next edition is slimmer. It could be made a bit wider and longer, and could be more concise in some areas and have less wasted space in others. With these changes, the book could easily be less than 300 pages. If this were the case, I'd buy it again in a heartbeat.

Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy, Third Edition Review

Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders in Pregnancy, Third Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Chesley's Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy is the seminal textbook on the subject. It is really strong on the epidemiology of the hypertensive disorders of pregnancy. It is a little weak on the basic science side, with chapters written by investigators highlighting their own research, not a broad enough scope of the field in my opinion. That being said, it is the best that is out there, and a "must have" for clinicians and researchers interested in hypertension in pregnancy in all of its forms.

The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk: Foreword by Martha Sears, RN Review

The Breastfeeding Mother's Guide to Making More Milk: Foreword by Martha Sears, RN
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book has sections that would be wonderful for any expecting mother to read: understanding the biology of milk making, normal breastfeeding behaviors, best steps to get your supply off to a good start, and how to know if you should really be concerned about low supply - many mothers go through at least a moment or two of doubt! But for those of us currently in the trenches dealing with low supply or wondering how we can be more successful for the next baby, this book is just packed with information!
"While it's true that most mothers can make enough milk [to feed their babies], we are now learning that there are definitely mothers who really aren't making enough milk." For those of us who have been there and done that, this affirmation by experts in the field of lactation of the painful reality we have struggled with almost makes the book worth it all on its own. But of course, the authors offer much, much more in reassuring and informative discussions that fully explain what they call "The Milk Supply Equation" - the factors, from adequate breast tissue to effective and frequent milk removal, that work together to ensure a good milk supply.
I'm well-read, worked closely with a lactation consultant for months, and still learned one or two really helpful (and generally SIMPLIFYING, stress-reducing) things in each chapter. For instance, it explains how to supplement without damaging the supply you have, and perhaps even in such a way that it helps to increase it... But perhaps most importantly, the book will help you think through the underlying causes behind your supply issues and how to address them. Because without knowing the root of the problem, it's hard to direct interventions effectively...
As a concluding personal note, that's why I sound so gung-ho about this book... I would have given it a great review anyway, but I had a HUGE ah-ha moment reading through Ch. 8. I have insufficent glandular tissue, and had only ever heard about it in relation to hormonal causes. Yet I always felt like "hormonal imbalance" was a diagnosis that didn't fit me. Reading through Ch. 8 I learned that injuries to the breast during childhood and adolescence can also halt or impair breast development - and that fits me to a tee! So now I have confirmation that I need to focus on interventions to grow tissue, but really don't need to concern myself with the hormonal imbalance piece. I hope this book is just as helpful for many other women out there.

Conquering Diabetes: A Complete Program for Prevention and Treatment Review

Conquering Diabetes: A Complete Program for Prevention and Treatment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a 57-year-old man who has been struggling with Type 2 Diabetes for 21 years, I found this book helpful despite already being well read in this subject. Although I've had years of diabetes education, there were some good nuggets here about food, and useful, anecdotal patient success stories about the specific foods they eat and when they eat them.
My only complaint is that Dr. Peters needs to include one more chapter to deal with insulin injections, for those, like me, who have never used insulin before but who may need to do so in the future. And within that missing chapter, she needs to talk about the risk of gaining weight on insulin even with reduced calorie intake, which has happened to many acquaintences. Perhaps these people are doing something wrong, but Dr. Peters doesn't address this frequent and serious concern.
Still, for anyone who needs a lot of information about dealing with diabetes up front, this is as close as it gets to a one-stop shop.

A cutting-edge, comprehensive guide to diabetes and prediabetes treatment by a world- renowned physician The numbers are epidemic—more than 60 million Americans have prediabetes or diabetes—and the complications (heart disease, blindness, kidney failure) can be devastating. But they are not inevitable, says Anne Peters, M.D., who, in Conquering Diabetes, explains how prediabetes can be reversed and diabetes can be conquered. Millions of afflicted Americans are confused, frightened, and often receiving sub-par treatment from inexperienced primary care physicians. As a university-based researcher and clinician, Dr. Peters is at the forefront of the latest developments in the prevention and treatment of the disease. Conquering Diabetes offers readers a complete program, including what foods to eat/avoid, which medications help/hurt, and how to get the best treatment from your doctor. A Comprehensive Review for the Certification and Recertification Examinations for Physician Assistants: Published in Collaboration with AAPA and PAEA

I received this book yesterday and I was quite anxious to open it and start reviewing. I intend to use it for the PANRE. I was disappointed in the depth of the explaination of the conditions as well as treatments. The depth of information was not very good. The explanation of treatments for requiring antibiotic care was poor. Obviously, an infection is treated with an antibiotic. I would expect that the first line, second and third choices for antibiotic care would be presented here. They were not. As an ortho PA I was hopeful to see and review primary treatments for primary care diagnosises. The ortho section was abysmal. I will not even comment. I did compare this text to my old Auth text that I used for the PANCE and it lists antibiotic treatments where this text does not and its depth and breadth, I felt, was better. I think that is a very important detail especially for PAs that don't routinely see primary care problems. I am considering the new additions of Auth's review book and Van Rhee's as well, for the PANRE.

When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy, 3rd Edition Review

When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy, 3rd Edition
Average Reviews:

When I found out I was pregnant with twins, I looked to pregnancy books to help, but they approached twins as "a little extra pregnant". It wasn't until this book that I started REALLY knowing how to care for myself and my 2 babies. It saved my pregnancy and my sanity. A MUST! For example, the worshipped "What to expect when you're expecting" books gave me absolute INCORRECT information regarding exercise, diet, weight gain, working... and I spent the first part of my pregnancy miserable that I was losing weight and feeling awful. Something in my gut told me that 10 pounds in the first half of the pregnancy wasn't enough for twins. Also, the diet they wanted me to follow was making me throw up every day. My body, again, told me to just eat whatever I could keep down, but "THE BOOK" made me feel guilty about even LOOKING at a cheeseburger. Well, again, THANK GOD I found Dr. Luke and Tamara's book. It confirmed everything I'd already felt was right. Plus, it is written with a great positive attitude with so much encouragement. I would not be having such a healthy pregnancy without it. I will never stop being grateful for this book! I've told so many people about it and am happy to spread the word. READ IT READ IT READ IT!

Kaplan Medical USMLE Master the Boards Step 3 Review

Kaplan Medical USMLE Master the Boards Step 3
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have gone through pretty much all of the step 3 review books in the market including FA, Crush step 3, the nail the board, Board and ward, and Strong Medicine. I also have read the Kaplan Q book step 3
This volume surpass all of the above in terms of the quality of content, amount of fine detail, board relevancy, and the author's unique insights into the material as a good teacher himself.
He tend to shed a lot of good insight into the board questions. I had met him once in person when I was a medical student at the FHMC in Queens, NY.
But this book is not perfect (There is no such thing as a perfect board review book, we all know it). I wish there are more complete index, which is pretty bad and too brief. It takes some time to find a topic with "rushed out" kind of index.
Also, there are a few errors. It says that Mitral valve prolapse with even regurgitaion does not need endocarditis Prophylaxis but I have been able to verify with a few medical references including Harrison-the recent update- and Washington manual that MR with regurgitation needs prophylaxis.
the author boldly claims that there is no prophylatic therapy for cluster headache with some rather unconvincing logic, but I have read from several respectful sources that beta blockade or Calcium channel blockade must be given for prophylatic RX for cluster HA.
I also found this misleading information about ASCUS in Pap smear results. It says that if pap results in ASUC, the patient need HPV testing, But it does not mention the important fact that if the patient is a high risk group, ASUCS must mandate immediate Colposcopy biopsy.
Other shortcoming is the Leukemia section, which he almost neglect to cover the important facts about ALL and AML but throw in very vague mixed information under title "Acute leukemia".
Other than the index, it is a decent volume and very reasonable priced. I would not recommend it as a sole review source though. Step 3 seem to ask the understanding of the concepts and application of the further managements contrast to the step 2 which is more of recognition of the key words and classic signs. Thus I reject this book's so called Guarantee passing score Claim....I highly recommend a second review book beside this for a better performance on step 3.It is really unreasonable to claim that this book has "everthing" to do pass step 3. I never recommend Strong Medicine, which is consistent of skeletal bullet list of the information without no actual bread and butter for each disease presentation. This book fails to demonstrate the competency and confidence of the material presented with a fair amount of wrong information as well.
FA is also not recommended since its missing out too many topics and is also very boring to read with little insights. I only use the 100 CCS cases on the back of this book. Board and Ward is not recommended as well since its too basic to tackle the step 3 questions, which tend to ask much more in dept understanding and managements than mere factual key words, which is what is all about Board and Ward. It was useful for step 2 though and NBME Shelf exams.
PS: I passed the step 3 with 217/91%,(October 2010) which I have to give a lot of credit toward this great book. Peace after the agony of waiting for the score, which sent to me via a lengthy email @ 12 PM, midnight third wednesday. Yet the matching process is yet to be known. Career in medicine consumes my soul and the person itself. Prayers for all.

A Patient's Guide to PCOS: Understanding--and Reversing--Polycystic Ovary Syndrome
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was recently diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 29 and after reading this book, realize that I have probably have had this since I started puberty! I was diagnosed two months before this book came out and finally received my copy the other day...I never anticipated a book so much. Finally, I have a guide book for this syndrome! Dr. Futterweit is one of the nation's foremost authorities on this condition and has spent his life researching and treating this condition. This book is the ultimate guide to understanding PCOS, getting a correct diagnosis (as symptoms are variable among all women and are sometimes diagnosed incorrectly), eating and exercise habits to help reverse the condition, as well as strategies for alleviating many other horrible symptoms like excess facial hair, acne, thinning scalp hair, etc. As I devoured this book I found myself saying over and over, "wow, this is my life". The book is written in such a great tone. While some of the 'understanding PCOS' parts are very medical, it's not so filled with medical jargon that you won't understand it. It is evident that Dr. Futterweit truly cares about women with this condition and wants to educate us and give us hope! If you are like me, I am only discovering the full fledged condition as a result of going off the pill in hopes of getting pregnant. There are parts of this book dedicated to Getting Pregnant, Staying Pregnant (PCOS sufferers have increased chances of miscarriage), gestational diabetes, etc.
I feel this book has given me a wealth of information, some of which I intend to share with my primary care physician and ob gyn. I also found that a great compliment to this book in terms of dietary guidelines is Dr. Jennie Brand-Miller's The New Glucose Revolution Guide to Living Well with PCOS. I had no idea that due to this condition I have a form of insulin resistance and I've battled weight all my life. It turns out the usual low fat diets that tend to be higher carbohydrate are one of the worst ways that PCOS sufferers can handle their diet. I've already found much success with a low glycemic index diet in just 6 weeks and am startled at how much my overall quality of life has improved with Dr. Futterweit's strategies which are well defined in this book. If you are recently diagnosed or have had this condition for years without much success at battling the symptoms, this book is for you. I can confidently say that I'm on the road to battling this syndrome with education and a newfound lifestyle.

Diabetes: Fight It with the Blood Type Diet (The Eat Right 4 Your Type Library)

My family has a history of type 2 diabetes, so I wanted to know how to avoid becoming a diabetic. This book in addition to the other books especially Live Right 4 Your Type have been excellent resources to help me understand my genetic hertitage. I am an O blood type, secretor. I am amazed at how much more energetic and powerful I feel now that I have been utilizing the diet for a year now. I rarely feel fatigued now. I have increased muscle mass. Best of all, now that I have eliminated wheat products, dairy and corn from my diet, I do not have anymore cramping/pain in my colon.
I know that avoiding the 'avoid foods' is difficult. It was for me too; I had been eating a goblet of ice cream every night before going to bed and I loved OREO cookies. As we get older (I'm 40 now) however we need to leave such childish eating behavior behind us if we want to be healthy and this book is the best resource I have read to date. If you are overweight and/or diabetic and you want take eating action to solve your health condition this book is a start. I also would highly recomend working with a doctor who is IjHI (Institute for Human Individuality) Certified. These doctors specialize in treating diabetes and other preventable health conditions with this diet. These doctors are not cheap but worth every penny if you value your health. Doctors not certified are simply unaware of treatments that can solve someones diabetic condition, so they prescribe what they know short term solutions (drugs).
I love being in control of my health, my kids do too. It's not easy or cheap, but it's worth it. If you solve the problem, you live life with joy; If treat the symptoms only, you live life with agony.

Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo has forever changed the strategy for eating right to lose weight and achieving maximum health. Because he discovered what many already instinctively knew-that a plan that works for one person may make another ill-there will never be a one-size-fits-all diet again. And since we now know that each blood type is affected differently by common diseases and conditions, there will never be a one-size-fits-all plan of action. With more than 2 million copies of his books in print, G. P. Putnam's Sons announces the launch of Dr. D'Adamo's Eat Right 4 (for) Your Type Library. Over the next two years, eight books will be published on eight different conditions, the first two being cancer and diabetes. In these books, readers will find new information individualized for their blood type and illness. In addition to the food categories Beneficial, Neutral, and Avoid, Dr. D'Adamo introduces a new category-Superbeneficial-for helping your body fight disease. He also introduces self-assessment tests to determine status and measure progress. Supplement, lifestyle, and exercise protocols are tailored to each blood type and condition. There has never been a better arsenal for fighting disease, and never an easier or clearer tool.

One of my favorite books in this series. It covered every question that I had on my shelf examination in no time flat and it was an excellent read. In fact, I read through it so quickly that it really left me with more than enough time to read through other books during the rotation. You will find that it rarely introduces a topic that is far fetched, and it will never leave you with too little information about the topic being presented. The questions at the end of each chapter were well thought out and inquisitive. It gives a clinical spin on every topic, and it covers all of the "most commons" very well. Make no mistake, this is one of the best in the series and should be used frequently by med students trying to pass their shelf exam.

About a month ago, in an effort at preventitive medicine to lower my cholestorol and resulting high blood sugars, my GP sent me to a cardiovascular surgeon. Well as a person that rarely has gone to doctors I wasn't exactly excited what this guy told me, but, when I asked him to explain what kind of a diet or program I should follow he just said buy the book Sugar Busters and follow what it says .....
I have been on all kinds of diets before (who hasn't) and every time some Doctor tried to explain to concepts to me they generally lasted only short periods since the darn diets just didn't make any sense, and it just felt like pieces were missing in the overall puzzle of chemistry in they body related to proteins, carbohydrates, sugars, chloesterol, good bad etc etc.....
What a great surprise this book was to me. Not only does it tie all the pieces together and explain its' diet as the 'Sugarbusters way of eating is roughly 40 percent carbohydrates 30 percent protein and 30 percent fat, it is a balanced diet' that makes overall sense.....
The authors go to great detail to explain the functions of the pancreas, the purposes of insulin, glucanol and exactly what happens when you eat a high protein meal vs a high cargohydrate meal....
For example, the book explains that "The glycemic index (GI) is a measure of how much of a specific amount of ingested carbohydrate (usually 50 grams) will cause a persons blood sugar to rise and remain elevated over time relative to the effect on blood sugar of the same amount of pure glucose (which is assigned a GI of 100)... NOW HERE's THE SHOCKER FOR ME the book continues that to "compare the potatoes blood stimulating effect realtive to table sugar is that it would take 118 grams of sugar to have the same impact as one potato. That is 29 1/2 teaspoons of sugar ... WOW all that from one miserable white potato ....
From a historical perspective the book explains that sugar is not even mentioned in the bible and is a modern phenomena dating back only to 500 AD .... obviously the authors have the hots against processed sugars, flour, white potatoes, even white rice (surprising to me cause I thought that rice was a salvation for me .... WRONG) .... The authors also do something that I would have thought was ABSOLUTE BLASPHEMY and even HERECY in that they talk about the famous US goverment food pyramid, that even my dog knows by heart, and advise the reader the this pyramid was formed after many battles with the sugar lobby, the flour lobby, the potato lobby, meat people, egg people, milk people etc etc etc ... needless to say the resulting pyramid is more than suspect, for lack of using stronger words .......
Ok .. so you get the picture ... and as an added bonus this book contains som 100 pages of recepies from restaurants around the US that are in line with the Sugar Busters diet ....
This is one FABULOUS book that is well written, easy to understand, clear cut (don't really need a PhD in chemistry to understand it)and I feel is a definive answer to all those bits and pieces of diet information and stupid, misleading and politically correct food pyramids that I have been exposed to over my 'sugar eating' lifetime.....

First let me say that there are many books written on Type 2 diabetes but most are US authors. Its great to have a book written for Canadian. There are some subtle differences on how the US and Canadians approach diabetes as well as some of the products that are available.
This book offers up the standard fair for diabetics. So like many of the other books on the market it really is not that much difference. What sets the book apart is that it uses Canadian References, measurements and guidelines. This is important to know when you are trying to research the diease.
If you are going to get one book and are Canadian this book would be the one to buy, it offers up a wide variety of subjects. From What is Diabetes, diet, exercise, medicines and how to live with the diasease.

The Metabolism Miracle: 3 Easy Steps to Regain Control of Your Weight . . . Permanently

For years I tried all kinds of diets saying to myself they should work if I really follow the rules, but they didn't. I thought I failed. Yet deep down I knew there was more to it. I'm not that lazy, yet the scale said otherwise. Then I learned about The Metabolism Miracle...and it is a miracle. In very clear language Diane Kress explains why my physiology doesn't fit the mold of all those other diets. She tells me why I am different and why those other diets will never work for me; something I knew but didn't understand. And it's backed up by fact based on Diane's research and physiology of the human body. A lot this has been known for a long time, yet no one has put the puzzle together like Diane has before. The book is full of information on how my body's metabolism works. The book explains each phase of the program in easy to follow steps and how your body will react to each step and it's full of data supporting each phase. In reading the book it seemed like there was an answer to each possible question - what if I slip (there's a plan to get back on track); what types of foods can I eat (not only are there sample menus, there are pages and pages of recipes); what do I do if I go out to eat; etc, etc. The book will be a reference book for me for years to come. I really am excited that I've found where I belong.

There is a reason that some people can eat all they want and seemingly never gain a pound, while others count every calorie, exercise, and can't lose an ounce. Millions of people-an estimated 45 percent of dieters-have Metabolism B, a condition that causes the body to over-process carbohydrate foods into excess body fat. Registered dietitian Diane Kress's scientifically based, easy-to-follow program has helped thousands of people with Metabolism B lose weight and keep it off.
As someone who struggled with Metabolism B for years, Kress knows firsthand the frustration of diets that don't work. The solution? A simple, three-step, carb-controlling program that stabilizes blood glucose levels and reprograms the metabolism to melt away fat. The Metabolism Miracle starts working on Day 1.

Take Charge of Your Diabetes: A diabetes book that describes a completely new approach to treat diabetes.

I am finding this book interesting to read and not dry. It clearly explains what happens in our bodies if we have Insulin Resistant Syndrome or diabetes and what can be done, both medically and holistically. I like that it is easy to read, well organized, and one can quickly move through it. I have learned more than I expected to learn. I thought I had done a lot of research on this subject, but now I am learning the details I have been wanting. I want to get copies for my family members who are resistant to looking at what is happening to them, before it is too late. I think internists should read this, too. I have noticed by talking to others with blood sugar problems that they and their doctors have not heard of Insulin resistant syndrome.

Though not all physicians are aware of the scientific advances that prove it, most diabetics can now avoid insulin injections and prevent or reverse the deadly complications of their disease. The key is treating the root problem-insulin resistance-instead of focusing on controlling blood sugar levels, an outdated practice that puts patients at greater risk for heart attack and stroke. Take Charge of Your Diabetes showcases the unique plan Dr. Zaidi has developed in treating thousands of cases of Type 1 and Type 2 successfully. Dramatically different from traditional treatment protocols, the program includes an easy-to-follow diet, a moderate exercise and stress-reduction plan, vitamin and supplement recommendations, and a prescription medication regimen that reduces the number of medications as time goes on instead of the traditional treatment model: stepping up doses as diabetes progresses.
